The publishing industry is the prototype of cultural content, high value-added industry and can significantly contribute to introduce a nation’s culture to the world. That is, literature is content for globalization and implies the meaning of national culture beyond its primary and ideological meaning. However, despite these, the importance of the publishing industry has been overlooked. Considering the circumstances, this study examined the present situation of Korean children"s books abroad and figured some strategies for boosting the overseas expansion.
The results shows that Korean children"s books were introduced mainly to Asian countries like China, Taiwan, Thailand and Japan. How-to Books were introduced to China, Taiwan and Thailand. Picture books with diverse content and unique techniques were sold in Japan. Western countries like France, Switzerland, Germany, and the United States also imported Korean children’s books. The most introduced book through Europe was The Cat School. It is worthy of notice that many Korean children"s books were exported to France after the book was introduced to the country. Books dealing with Korean culture and sentiment and unique materials have been exported to Switzerland, Germany, and the United States. This can be an indication of what Korean children"s literature should do in the future. In fact, the priority is the production of good works and good translation for overseas expansion of Korean children"s books. However, this study, based on the results of the examination, can suggest the followings to activate the overseas expansion of Korean children"s books: cataloging and systemization of translated·export books, seeking to diversify the content in the publishing industry, aiming of customized market strategy plan and strengthening the national level of support for the investment.
