This article investigated the change of the northwestern border resulted from Silla’s policy heading northward. The northwestern border of Silla in late 5th century was the Sobaek Mountains. In late 540 and 550 Silla advanced over the Sobaek Mountains to Chungju, Danyang, Cheongju, took possession of the Han River Area in early 550, and established the Sinju there. From that time to around 675 the northwestern border of Silla was a line connecting the Cheonseong castle of the Imjin River downstream, the Chiljungseong of the Imjin River middle, the Daejeonriseong and Choseongriseong of the Imjin River upstream and Hantan River downstream, and the Nangbiseong(Banweolsanseong) located in Gunnaemyeon, Paju city. In 675 Silla organized Southern part of Goguryeo over the Imjin River to Silla’s region, at this time many towns located between the Imjin and Yeseong River was newly included to the Hansanju area. Silla advanced to Paegang Rigion from early 8th century, established 14 towns like the Yeongpunggun around Paegang Rigion in eastern of the Jaeryeong River, thus at last northern Silla border reached the Daedong River.
