This paper is not primarily about Blake's influence upon Ginsberg, though it is concerned about the question of influence and tries to suggest what influence Blake has upon Ginsberg. We can map Ginberg's poetic career as a gradual coming-to-terms with the problematic character of his "Blake." Ginsberg's Blake visions constitute a kind motif flowing through the body of his work. For over three decades after his initial experience, the visions sustained and yet in some degree haunted Ginsberg's poetic enterprise.
But in renouncing Blake the external figure, the "guru," Ginsberg assumed the voice of Blake into the flux of his own universal consciousness. Hence by renouncing Blake, Ginsberg was in fact renouncing himself―or the limited conception of himself as a single, separate ego "I." And writing poems constantly awoke in Ginsberg the question, " Who is the 'I' responsible for these poems? Having made these initial discoveries, Ginsberg dove even deeper seeking the "bottom" of human existence.
