This thesis attempts to discuss the views of nature in Hemingway's The Old Man the Sea. An anthropocentric view of nature pervades the novel. For Santiago as a fisherman, nature represented by the sea should be conquered. In this view of nature, man is much superior to any kind of animal, including fish, and is required to fight against nature. In the deep ecological view of nature, there is a wholeness between human beings and nature; all the living things in the universe are friends and brothers. The view of oneness is emphasized in this ecological view of nature, as Santiago feels that the heart of the turtle is identical to his own heart and his own hands and feet are personified as living things. In conclusion, Hemingway's transference from negative view to positive one is reflected in the novel in terms of the view of nature. Santiago's anthropocentric view of nature, which reflects Hemingway's negative and destructive view of life, develops through a primitive one into an ecological one, which is closely related to Hemingway's positive view of life, in which all the living things are regarded as a wholeness.
