Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s work, “Hell screen” is various interpretations has been realized. Especially the main character, suicide of Yoshihide means that the defeat of the art-for-art principle. And his images of the novel means the author’s ideal image. I agree Yoshihide’s image was the author’s ideal image. But I don’t agree suicide of Yoshihide means the defeat of the art-for-art principle.
So I try to analyze with a different perspective his suicide. First, I will analyse the specific characteristics of the narrator. Because the narrator has some of characteristic. Especially His explanation is subjective. Moreover he doesn"t have a knowledge of art. But his descriptions is so delicate. So, I try to analyze more carefully the story of the novel.
Second, I will analyse Yoshihide’s Artistic view. Yoshihide has some artistic view. They are “Realism” and “beauty of an ugly thing”.These artisic view are shown in all his work. In this regard I think he is a true artist. So I want to find out this artist"s goal. I think “Realism” is Yoshihide’s technical artistic view and identity. And “Beauty of an ugly thing” is his ideological foundation. And his ideal. So I think“Beauty of an ugly thing” will be find the meaning of Yoshihide’s suicide.
Finally I will based on these contents, I would like to tell my opinion about the meaning of his suicide. I think Yoshihide’s suicide means the author"s message of the arts. Also, I think it means to send a message to the writer himself.
