This paper aims to examine common linguistic characteristics of suicide notes and possibilities of identifying authenticity of suicide notes and the profile of the author from a (forensic) linguistic point of view. It also aims to present a necessity of applying linguistic knowledge and linguistic insights from this study to developing suicide prevention solutions for pre-detecting and preventing committing suicide. We examined common linguistic characteristics of suicide notes of Cobain, Woolf, and the late President Roh by using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count(henceforth LIWC) program and the forensic semantic analysis. The results show that former President Roh is sharply different from Cobain and Woolf in the dimension of emotions. It is supposed that Roh’s suicide note has characteristics of altruistic and fatalistic suicide types. The linguistic analysis on suicide notes can be used to develop suicide prevention solutions with the cooperation of different disciples such as corpus linguistics and statistical analysis in Korea where suicide has become one of the most national social issues.
