The purpose of this study is to examine the effects that L1 transfer has on Korean learners’ use of the subordinate conjunction because. For this purpose, 166 because-clauses in 156 college students’ English writings were analysed in terms of the ordering of because-clauses and main clauses. The results showed that 77 because-clauses (46.4%) followed main clauses while four because-clauses (2.4%) preceded main clauses. Particularly, 85 ungrammatical independent becauseclauses (51.2%) were used most frequently without main clauses. Based on these results, this study suggests that Korean learners have a strong tendency to recognize because as waynyahamyen in Korean. Waynyahamyen is an adverb that explains the reason and cause of the statement of the preceding sentence. This kind of L1 transfer is shown to cause Korean learners to use independent and final because-clauses rather than initial because-clauses. The results of this study imply that explicit instruction, in regard to the ordering of because-clauses and main clauses, should be provided to Korean EFL learners.
