This study investigated the influence of the L1 in the process of L2 writing among five university students majoring in English linguistics at a top-notch university in Korea. The participants were divided into two groups. The first group used their L1 to make an outline on the topic given for their expository essay task, then wrote their essays in English. The other group used English in both outlines and essays. Results showed that the L1 influence was apparent in all the students’ writing both in mechanics and organization regardless of the order of language used, confirming the importance of the learners’ L1 in the process of L2 writing.
