In a section of “the Analects of Confucius · YanYuan”, Ji Zi Cheng said: “All a gentleman needs is substance. Why does he need form?” Zi Gong replied, “Sadly, you speak about gentleman., but a team of four horses couldn’t catch up to your tongue!” Thus, Ji Zi Cheng argues that one only needs content, and not form. However, Zi Gong replied to this claim that one not only needs content, but form is also needed.
Through the passage quoted above, we may understand, that the Tao is composed of two parts, content and form. Then which opinion would be supported by Confucius? The author of this article discusses the following problems; 1), What factors of form and content are included in the Tao? 2) How may we distinguish between form and content in the Tao? 3) Regarding form and content in the Tao, which view may we suggest that Confucius supported? Also, in order to answer these questions, the writer intends to use the Analects of Confucius, “rites” and the “book of songs” and other relevant sources to confirm it.
