The purpose of this thesis was to examine the rhetoric of unconsciousness in Jo Hyang’ poetics concretely. Jo Hyang referred not only surrealism theory but also discussion about unconsciousness by several people such as Sigmund Freud, Marcel Proust, James Joyce, etc. and based on them, explored unconscious rhetoric. It thoroughly showed the symbol theory of Sigmund Freud, the metaphor theory of surrealism, the unconscious theory of rhetorical world, etc.
Jo Hyang discussed the analysis on dream, Sigmund Freud discovered unconsciousness, in detail and during the process, debated on ‘Freudian symbol’ deeply. And, he compared it with the dream symbol of Korean traditional culture.
Jo hyang’ language theory was related with surrealism which he was oriented to, which his poetry was also influenced by. Jo Hyang showed deep concerns about the metaphor theory surrealism because he considered it as unconscious metaphor.
In addition, Jo Hyang also explained unconsciousness in relation to language. He insisted that unconsciousness is a kind of signs and it is developed by logic of metaphor and metonymy.
