Since the split between the Catholic Church and the Church of England in the 16th century, British literature had focused on making distinctions between Britain and Catholic countries as a way of reinforcing the national identity of British people. Thus in British literature Italy was typically represented as the other characterized by popery, murder, poison, and a tendency for revenge. However, the wicked characters from Catholic countries in Europe and anti-Catholic discourses in The Woman in White that are meant to play on the readers’ deep-rooted fears, and prejudices are transformed into a mechanism to expose and problematize the gender norms and marriage customs as well as moral codes in the Victorian era.
Marian’s resoluteness and masculine features with swarthy complexion are deliberately contrasted with Laura’s pliability and pale complexion. Though Marian’s androgynous characteristics and un-English features tend to be imputed to Italianness, and consequently a secret bond between her and Count Fosco is implied, she is the New Woman, the offspring of British women’s suffrage movement in the Victorian era.
Since Fosco reveals the hypocritical and rigid nature of Victorian moral codes and demonstrates that Britain, not Italy, imposes repressive marriage and gender norms on women, Italianness and anti-Catholic discourses in The Woman in White turn out to illuminate the defectiveness of Britishness rather than the wickedness of Italianness.
