John Steinbeck, a Nobel Prize-winning author, is famous as one of the most original and best authors of film, such as Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, and East of Eden. In addition, he has written many films set in Mexico, such as The Forgotten Village, The Pearl, and Viva Zapata! Especially, Viva Zapata! displays deep social consciousness based on Emiliano Zapata, a revolutionary among Latin American farmers, who was written as a form of reasonable resistance out of the necessity farmers had rather than the greed shared by ambitious rebels. The purpose of this paper is to illuminate Steinbeck’s concept of social justice and idea of a leader among people by observing his original works in film and highlight the differences between a revolt among the people and political upheavals by analyzing Zapata’s behavioral distinctions helped by precedent research. As a result, it is shown that land reform, rather than political craving, is instrumental in becoming a leader. Having a sense of justice as well as a sense of humanity allows the leader, following the demands of the people, to hope for peace ceaselessly, hate authoritarianism and keep the cause of the revolt and the love of the people close to heart, all the while showing his pure heart to his love in life.
