The purpose of this paper is to compare and analyze the practical principles of Islam in John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. Through comparison and analysis of the Islamic elements of Steinbeck’s works that were not at the center of discussion, I firstly studied on the relationship between Steinbeck and Islam (Sufism), and then I conducted a study on what kind of Islamic thought permeated in Steinbeck’s work. Especially in the Chapter III, I drew the six major themes by comparing The Grapes of Wrath and the Qur’an, the sacred book, more specifically. In fact, there is no definite proof of Steinbeck’s intentional application of these Islamic themes, but I am sure that there are a lot of principles of Islam in The Grapes of Wrath through careful readings of this novel. In the end, Steinbeck’s themes provide insights into the inspiration for a righteous life and the commonalities of people and religions in the world.
