This study aims to review John Steinbeck’s last novel The Winter of Our Discontent(1961) in the whole context of literary development. Through this study, The Winter of Our Discontent is not a retreat to the early social resistance novel of Steinbeck, nor is it the moral extreme of modern fiction. Rather, it is the final phrase to show Steinbeck’s critical view of capitalist ideology. In fact, the most attempts to consider the status of The Winter of Our Discontent in the context of Steinbeck’s early works begin with focusing on the specific narrative form and background of the work. However, The Winter of Our Discontent combines two distinct trends in Steinbeck’s novel. The first is the tendency to demystify the relationship between human and the commodities which they depend on by emphasizing objective realism in pre-war works. Second, narrative and human relationships tend to focus on a particular and mysterious central object, especially in the post-war works of Steinbeck. Therefore, through the main character, Ethen, it will provide a convincing example of how modern capitalist ideology continues in the space between knowledge and action.
