Of all the ancient script materials, wooden tablet is one of the most excellent materials to explore the hand writings by administrative officials. This paper is to search for the characteristics of the calligraphic style of wooden tablets of the United Silla by use. Tag wooden tablets and document wooden tablets became popular in the Old Silla period, but document wooden tablets decreased and tag wooden tablets increased in the United Silla period. By the United Silla period, character-practice wooden tablets and rite wooden tablets were also added, and their sorts and calligraphic styles became diverse.
The calligraphic style of tag wooden tablets is antique and unrestricted, that of character-practice wooden tablets natural and humorous, that of document wooden tablets in good order, and that of rite and incantation wooden tablets bold and vigorous. Comparing the writings of the Old Silla to those of the United Silla in same use, the latter became more skillful. Despite the difference in skill, their calligrphic esthetics in harmony with use are the same.
