This study tries to understand modern culture and to analyze Yong-dong Kwonbun of colonial time in Incheon. It will then find out the meanings of Kwonbun in Incheon region. Incheon, the port city, was the area of acculturation where received continuous incomings of other culture since the opening of the port. Particularly, the port was successful in the colonial period since the rice merchants around the country came to the port that import and export rice. Unsurprisingly, the area grew as a center of consumption and leisure culture. Investigating the process of organizing Yong-dong Kwonbeon, and comparing with other Kwonbeons, We paid attention to its contents of education as an educational institution for artistic accomplishments. We also focussed on high-class restaurants and places for performance where are Gisaengs' main stage of activity in that period. Futhermore, We studied what kind of relationship had been made between Gisaengs and local society. We expected that my study could grasp the facts of Kwonbeon in Incheon province and, at the same time, give us understandings of cultural peculiarity in Incheon. As the method of study, paper records were examined such as government records of colonial periods, articles of incorporation of Kwonbun, newspaper articles, and magazine articles. To supplement the limits of paper records, interviews with people who can speak about Yong-dong Kwonbun were followed. Writers, artists, and people who are currently living in Yong-dong were interviewed, and on-site research was also taken. The results of the research are as follows. Yong-dong Kownbun changed its name from Soseong Kwonbun in 1901 to Inhwa Kwonbun, and to Incheon Kwonbun. Yong-dong Kisaeng were people who lived by earnings after singing and dancing at the places such as restaurants. However, they were also partly related to Incheon society. The records showed that they participated in Mulsanjangnyeoundong(the regional product supporting movement) and nationalist movement, and gave fundraising for the society. They held a concert to collect funds to enlarge the In-hwa elementary school playground. They also held a fundraising concert for Incheon 2 public school establishment. They appeared as guest artists at the Incheon Aegwan Movie Contest. The fact that their social activities can be found on the major daily newspapers show that they produced social influence with meanings. Yong-dong Kwonbun produced famous pop-culture star in the early days. Actress 복?혜?숙 pop singer 이?화?자 traditional singer 이?화?중?선 actress 유?신?방were all from Yong-dong Kwonbun. Some of them were cast after they achieved popularity with talent and beauty at Yong-dong Kwonbun. Some popular actresses, on the contrary, came to Yong-dong Kwonbun due to financial reasons. The relationship of those artistically talented women with Incheon riches and celebrities at the time created various gossips, and aroused public interests. Currently, there were only few Yong-dong residents who knew about the history or the existence of Kwonbun since they were mostly came from other areas. What is worse is that the government officials made incorrect explanations about Kwonbun to the general public at the Yong-dong regional festival, and thus spread the distortions of the history. The accurate information and awareness of Yong-dong Kwonbun are needed since it is part of Incheon’s culture and history. It must not be viewed simply as a decadent customs. Given that almost no research on Yong-dong Kwonbun has been taken previously, this paper is meaningful to be the first comprehensive study observing various aspects such as foundation, size, activities, famous artists affiliated with Kwonbun, and social function and effects. Yet, the fact that there were very limited paper records since it was not about Seoul area, and that there were not many interviewees who can distinctively remember the past are the limits of this paper. By studying oral history in a broad sense with Incheon natives in the future, and by the long-term fieldwork, the paper will be complemented. This will be left for the future research.
