As the Foundation of Joseon dynasty was resulted from collapse of Yuan centered east asia world order in the late of 14th century, the leading figures of new dynasty faced with two kinds of difficult problem. One was that they had to made a good relationship with Ming dynasty which had replaced Yuan dynasty in China. The other was that they had to justify the foundation of new dynasty which had replaced Goryeo dynasty in Korea. Because these problems were neither easy nor simple, the leading figures of new dynasty tried to find efficient way in various aspects to solve, and finally found a little clue in naming of new dynasty.
The leading figures of new dynasty asked emperor of Ming dynasty for naming of their new dynasty. This could appeal their submissive attitude toward Ming dynasty contrary to their former dynasty, Goryeo. After convention of government, they raised two candidates to emperor, Joseon, and Hwaryeong. This was the name of hometown of founder of new dynasty, and that was the name of first dynasty in Korea as well as Gija"s dynasty. As the former was no match for the latter in many aspects, this process means that the leading figures of new dynasty expected, or forced emperor to choose the latter.
As the emperor of Ming dynasty, the latter was much familiar to himself at one side, and could remind idealistic relationship between King Wu of Zhou and Gija at the other side, whereas the former had no meaning to him. He had no reason to refuse the name of Joseon. On the other hands, as the leading figures of new dynasty, the name of Joseon was very useful to justify their foundation, because it means that they directly inherited the historic legitimacy of Gija"s confucian value as well as Dangun"s value of the beginning in Korea, passing over Goryeo, and Three Kingdoms which neither had any confucian value, nor could occupied the whole territory of Korea. The name of new dynasty, Joseon was determined through this process.

본 글은 조선왕조의 국호 결정 과정을 고려 말 이래의 역사적 전개 과정 속에서 살펴본 연구이다. 고려를 무너뜨리고 이성계를 국왕으로 옹립하며 수립된 새 왕조는 고려 말 이래 동아시아 질서의 급격한 변동 속에서 자신의 위상과 위치를 안정적으로 확보해야했다. 무엇보다 중원의 유일한 지배자가 된 명나라와의 관계 설정은 새 왕조의 안정적인 기반 조성을 위해 가장 중요하게 처리되어야 할 사안이었다. 하지만 최영의 요동 공벌 추진 이래 악화된 명나라와의 관계를 평화적으로 안정시키는 일과 새 왕조수립의 대내적인 정당성을 확보하는 일은 결코 쉽지 않았다. 새 왕조의 국호를 결정하는 문제 역시 이러한 과제 중에 하나였다. 무엇보다 새 국호를 보고하라는 지시를 내린 명나라의 만족과 동의를 이끌어내야 할 뿐 아니라 자국의 역사 속에서 새 왕조의 독존적 위상과 가치도 함께 드러날 수 있는 방향으로 추진되어야 했기 때문에 국호의 결정은 그 자체가 매우 어려운 정치적인 과제였다. 새 왕조의 건국자들은 홍무제에게 조선과 화령의 두 가지 후보를 올렸는데 이는 최종 결정권자로서의 홍무제의 정치적 위상을 고려한 조치였다. 하지만 이면에서는 두 가지의 후보 중에서 조선이 선택될 수 있도록 치열한 노력을 경주하였다. 대내적으로는 조선이라는 칭호에 기자와 단군 모두의 후계자라는 의미를 부여하면서도 정작 명나라에게 보고할 때는 오직 기자의 후계자라는 의미만을 부각하였다. 이는 홍무제와 이성계의 관계를 주 무왕과 기자의 관계로 유비함으로써 명나라의 거부감을 불식시키고, 명나라에 대한 새 왕조의 사대적 자세를 극대화시키기 위함이었다. 이러한 노력은 명나라 측에서 보기에도 큰 문제는 없었기 때문에, 홍무제는 새 왕조가 원한 대로 조선이라는 칭호로 최종 결정하였다. 이로써 명나라와 새 왕조 조선은 우호적인 분위기 속에서 관계를 시작할 수 있는 계기를 마련할 수 있었으나, 이는 시작이었을 뿐 앞으로의 상황 전개에 따라서 문제가 발생할 수 있는 가능성은 상존하고 있었다. 특히 국호를 결정해준 홍무제가 마땅히 뒤따라야 할 誥命과 印信을 보내지 않고 있었다는 점은 새 왕조와 이성계를 여전히 경계하고 있는 명나라 측의 기본적인 자세를 여실히 보여주는 것이었다. 그리고 그것은 바로 표전 문제로 현실화되었다.
