Speaking in tongues is the most frequently debated topic among religious experiences. While there were negative opinions about speaking in tongues recently, this paper attempts to claim against these arguments. Since speaking in tongues is a spiritual issue, one shall not deny the phenomenon for the reason of misunderstanding the language. It needs a careful and prudent approach. This paper tried to list the phenomena of speaking in tongues from the bible and church history and explored the general understandings about the phenomena as well.
Speaking in tongues is easy to be understood in negative ways for those who have not experienced it. It is easy to regard the experience as useless one due to its difficulty to understand the language. From time to time, some criticize it as a symptom of schizophrenia or demonic act. However, speaking in tongues in the bible took the place as a history of Holy Spirit and Paul also recommended speaking in tongues. In addition, as a part of church history, speaking in tongues gave a great influence to revival movement with pentacostal movement in 20th century.
Because it is not easy to interpret the speaking in tongues there are many misunderstandings about the phenomena. However, it is easy to understand the phenomena if one approached it from psychological perspective. With the concept of collective conscious by Carl Jung, speaking in tongues can be understood as a religious phenomenon that is represented in the presence of God. Thus, we need insights to yearn for the gift with positive perspective that goes beyond the mere criticisms.
