This study analyzed and explored the structures and meanings of Chinese words that are ordered paratactically. Unlike the Indo-European languages that feature complicated changes in cases or morphemes, the combination of words in Chinse is free from constraints, but is constrained a lot by the semantic elements. In particular, the relationship between an action and an object in Chinse depends not on the linguistic features but on the psychological understanding.
The so-called parataxis in Chinese refers to a linguistic form as well as the rule and the system that govern the linkage of different semantic elements when linguistic units are combined. Most words or phrases are linked according to semantic conditions, not grammatical features. The paratactic features of Chinese were not generated by chance with the rise of Modern Chinese, but had already been used in the era of Old Chinese.
In terms of the grammatical structures, both the paratactic words and phrases feature a verb-object order. Compared to the general verb-object structure where one action requires one object, the object of a paratactic word or phrase refers to the cause or means of the action. However, the paratactic words or phrases do not need a preposition in their structures. It strengthens the expressiveness of Chinese by enabling the language to deliver deep meanings and the most possible amount of information by adopting only simple and condensed surface structures.
