In modern times, values are changing fast. Art serves to enlarge objective and rational thinking in diverse fields in a variety of forms, using a variety of media, and is getting more access to the public to meet the requirements of the times for art`s social participation. The popularization of art removes the boundary between art and technology, between artistic merits and ornamentation, between the minority and majority, and between high and low classes. This situation makes craft valued more than ever. However, it shall be noted that craft have paid more attention to external features including ornament and function, compared to the other fields of art. For modern grass roots, the external imbalance of craft growth goes against the Zeitgeist of art that pursues new expressions, extended thinking by making experiment, and reestablished human spirits. So there is a concern that it`s likely to be isolated. Yet in modern art, there are boundless possibilities for craft, because object could be adapted in diverse forms owing to its properties of matter. Object refers to recreating existing matters to be a work of art by eliminating their usual meaning and instilling new values in them. It was initially introduced during the transition period of modern art from representation to presentation, and has removed the boundary between art and daily living, as it is recognized as a thing that expresses the relationship with daily living. Furthermore, the development of material civilization places more stock in entity, rather than absoluteness, subjectivity or ideality. Craft based on the concept of object could work as an art agent by which we could get closer to the cultural unity with the underlying social elements of modern times. That could further the relationship of creator to the public, paving the way for communication between them. The purpose of this study was to discuss the limitation and potentialities of craft and the concept and characteristics of object in modern art. the features of object in craft were largely categorized into function and symbolism. Craft is socially responsible for true communication and true sympathy with the public, which could be achieved through the function and symbolism of the object, and then it will be able to restore our unique, unsophisticated emotion throughout our whole lives, and craft culture will get on the right track. And it`s ultimately intended to suggest some of the right directions for craft in daily living and have it firmly settled in our society.
