The Mooshin Revolt(戊申亂) was a political disturbance initiated by the Soron Junso(少論 峻少) line to abdicate King Yeongjo(英祖) and drive the Noron(老論) members out of the political circles and suppressed by the Soron Wanso(少論 緩少) line with Namin(南人) playing a pivotal role and raising an army in the process. This study analyzed the causes of failure of the Revolt, which took a month or so from the occupation of Cheongju Fortress(청주성) on March 15, 1728 to the suppression of rebel forces and triumphant return to Seoul by the royal forces led by Oh Myeong-hang(吳命恒) on April 19. The analysis results were as follows
First, the figures of Soron Junso in Seoul, who made the first plan for the Revolt, clearly decreased in their expectations for and participation in the Revolt because of Jeongmihwanguk(丁未換局) in 1727, through which the figures of Soron Wanso seized power.
Second, there was a plan to raise an army in the Yeongnam region on March 10 before March 15 when they raised an army at Cheongju Fortress. The plan, however, fell flat as the Toigye School (退溪學派) of Andong(安東), who promised their participation in the Revolt, broke away.
Third, Byeonsanjeok of Honam region(湖南 邊山賊) had huge influences on the rebel forces and people with his rumors. However, Jeong Se-yun(鄭世胤), who was rumored to have relations with him, left Honam for Cheongju right before the Revolt, and Kim Su-jong(金守宗) never appeared in public with him. In the end, the Honam Forces missing the element of Byeonsanjeok failed in the Pyeonggyo Gathering(판교 모임) on March 14 and the attempt to take over Jeonju Fortress(전주성) led by Park Pil-hyeon(朴弼顯) on March 21.
Fourth, the most powerful force in the development of the Revolt was the Hoseo Rebel Forces(호서 반란군), but they failed to match the wits of royal forces that prevented the attempt to assassinate Oh Myeong-hang and used the spies of rebel forces to their advantage. Furthermore, Shingijeon(神機箭) of royal forces was enormously powerful that was not even comparable to the weapons of rebel forces.
Eventually, the Hoseo Rebel Forces was defeated in Anseong and Juksan Battle(안성·죽산전투)
