There are certain clear parallels between, on the one hand, the ‘cultic milieu’ described in mid-twentieth century studies of New Religious Movements (NRMs) and, on the other hand, descriptions of society by contemporary social theorists. From both perspectives, people become involved in multiple, constantly changing activities, groups and relationships, sequentially as well as simultaneously. However, in response to the emergence of the ‘cult controversy’ in the early seventies, the former set of researchers turned their collective attention to the more solid, sect-like NRMs. And the earlier, broader perspective was, for the most part, forgotten. As for the latter, most social theorists dismissed NRMs as marginal, deviant phenomena unworthy of sustained attention. The present paper aims to recover the perspective of earlier NRM studies. Additionally, we also discuss the idea of reframing this perspective in terms of social theories that examine the dynamism of contemporary, late modern lifestyles. In the latter part of our analysis, we present data from questionnaire research on three different NRMs which reflect the pattern of dispersed spirituality.
