Transhumanism has been called the true religion of Silicon Valley. Francis Fukuyama deemed it to be the world’s most dangerous idea. Filled with techno-optimism and hubris in equal parts, transhumanist ideas swirl around in Silicon Valley, academia, and your local bookstore. This paper will attempt to uncover the religious side of transhumanism from the perspective of New Religious Movement (NRM) studies. Using published materials, it will discuss and compare seven new religions with transhumanist roots: the Way of the Future Church, the Church of Perpetual Life, Church of Venturism, Church of Virus, The Society for Universal Immortalism, Terasem, and the Turing Church. All these groups share a fascination with the potential of life extension and evolution, two common themes in Silicon Valley discourse. Yet these NRMs are far from Silicon Valley clones. The paper concludes that the seven groups surveyed share three areas of concern: cryonics, enhancements, and the AI transition.
