A firm’s behavior is either constrained or facilitated by its ongoing social relations. This phenomenon is widely conceptualized as the logic of social embeddedness(Granovetter, 1985). A dynamic implication of this logic is that the exchange network at the society level would evolve as a caveman’s world, i.e., a collection of fragmented networks. However, this prediction contradicts the historical evidence that the capitalistic market emerged even when the selection of trading partners was deeply guided by the social relations of the organizations. To unveil this paradoxical phenomenon, I develop computational models of exchange networks to examine the emergence of a large-scale exchange network even when organizations are likely to form embedded ties under the following two conditions: status-localized transaction and procompetition policy. My study demonstrates that a nation-wide market can emerge even organizations form embedded ties. The hallmark of this nation-wide market is that finegrained information of trading partners is navigatable through the networks. Furthermore, this study examines that pro-competition policy unwittingly leads to the emergence of a nation-wide market. Although the policy originally was intended to deter the growth of network in the market, it paradoxically helps to boost the emergence of interconnected market. Moreover, this market resembles perfectly competitive market in that most potential partners’ information is searchable.
