This paper examines topos of ‘square’ and ‘market’ in the Choi In-Hoon’s the square, and Park Kyung-ni’s the market and battlefield. Choi In-Hoon’s the square shows criticism of ideology through the rhetoric of space, ‘square’ and ‘secret room’. Park Kyung-ni’s novel, the market and battlefield is based on the dynamic relation with an ideology, in a different way with the previous literary convention. The special place, ‘market’ makes some important implications in the rhetoric of space. It represents a double meaning of utopia and reality. And ‘battlefield’ mediate it. Against the literary convention, for example ‘communist=the Reds=monster’, two novels embody ideolog objectively.
And topos of ‘square’ and ‘market’ emblematize romantic ideas in common. In particular, it is related to the rhetoric of ‘blood’ and ‘heart’(the square), and discourse of ‘ex-reality’(the market and battlefield). This shows the author’s intent to take a view of the inside and outside of an ideology by topos newly.
