Hyaku-monogatari , which was published in July 1894, is a collection of ghost stories told at a ghost story society on December 25, 1893. This is noteworthy in that it is the first ghost story collection in the Meiji era, which revived the tradition of Hyaku-monogatari, which was in decline at the time.
This study examined seven stories, of a total of 34 published in the Hyaku-monogatari , in which modern-age concepts are mixed with those of past ages to extract characteristics of ghost stories in the Meiji era. These seven stories depict the point of view in which the civilized idea that ghosts are derived from a nervous reaction is crossed with traditionalideas at the time, and the stories present different conclusions, either negating or affirming the existence of ghosts. Likewise, two different views on ghosts are included in the collection, which indicates the internal conflict in Japan in the Meiji era resulting from the confusingsituationcausedbyexternalforces, and describes the conflicts between traditional and modern ideas.
