This article argues that Luther’s liturgical reform as a practical and creative approach to the reform of the Liturgy was the liturgical innovation of the Eucharist in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. Martin Luther rejected parts of the Roman Rite Catholic Mass, specifically the Canon of the Mass und reformed the late medieval liturgy of the Mass. He used the purity of God’s word in the light of the doctrine of justification as his main criteria for reforming the late medieval Latin Mass and typically utilized the words of institution as a central part of the Communion Service. The debate over the force and literalness of the words of institution underlies the arguments between consubstantiation and transubstantiation, because the real presence of Christ’s true body and blood in the Lord’s Supper was a controversial issue at the time of Luther.
In that Luther’s teaching on the Lord’s Supper focused not primarily on Christ’s sacrifice (on the cross) but on the delivery of what was earned by that sacrifice by means of the word of promise, worthy partakers are those who believe the word of promise: given and shed for you. Christians simply need to go to the Lord’s Supper held according to Christ’s institution and believe the word, eat the body, and drink the blood. Then they have what the words declare to them personally: forgiveness, life, and salvation. Furthermore, Luther stresses the congregation"s active participation in the service. In contrast to the teachings of the Roman church, Luther believed that believers did not need a human intercessor. Thus, all believers have been made priests, and in the Lutheran church this is known as “the royal priesthood of all believers.” It is this understanding which led Luther to emphasize active congregational involvement in the worship service, particularly through congregational singing.
