It has difficulties to research the ideological development of Mahayana while there are many questions unsolved about its rise. This research approaches from the social and economical influences on the religious development of Mahayana, especially the connection between the economy and Mahayana in ancient Western region.
Judging from circumstances, the idea of Mahayana must have had been arisen in India or Northwestern region of India. However it must have been hard to recognize and strengthen its differences among strong Hinayana.
When Mahayana later met the powerful motive of China, it could have given constant influence all over East Asia. As is known, China had causes for Mahayana at that time. The potentiality of Mahayana had made changes to adjust itself to Chinese society.
The monks who had been to China to spread changed their religious idea during their stay in China and later had made a turning point of Buddhism in Western religion after coming back from China.
It is not possible to exclude that the new religious trend had affected toward Western region where were also under Chinese economical influence.
Not different from nowadays, the nation which took the initiative in economy and international trade probably also had an affect on cultural side.
Considering that China was taking a leading role in political and economical ways on Silk Road, the perception and favor of China must have affected the other countries’ religion.
