Many studies have been conducted on the origin of Mahāyāna Buddhism, and it continues to be an ongoing area of research. However, a satisfactory answer to the fundamental question of why Mahāyāna Buddhism emerged has not yet been provided. Nevertheless, recent studies have reached a consensus that goes beyond differences in research subjects and analytical approaches. Specifically, it is suggested that Mahāyāna Buddhism did not originate as a result of a specific identifiable group or region but rather emerged sporadically and later acquired the label “Mahāyāna” as the phenomenon gradually became clearer. Therefore, in relation to the issue of the origin of East Asian Mahāyāna Buddhism, our task is to rationally explain the context before and after the emergence of the phenomenon as much as possible. From that perspective, this paper focuses on a peculiar phenomenon just before the emergence of Mahāyāna Buddhism, specifically the appearance of Bodhisattva statues in the Greater Gandhāra region. It draws attention to the fact that a concept of Bodhisattva, embodying meditation and wandering in the forest inspired by these Bodhisattva statues, was developed by a small number of ordained monks of the existing sectarian Buddhist monasteries. Subsequently, the hypothesis suggests that the foundation of Mahāyāna Buddhism was laid through the practice of meditation derived from existing scriptures, followed by modifications and innovations.
