Since Baker (1993) first advocated the use of corpora in translation studies, the corpus-based translation studies (CTS) field has gradually broadened its presence in the broader field of translation studies. Today, the term “corpus” has become quite familiar among translation researchers. However, such familiarity ironically makes them reluctant to initiate their own corpus-based research as they have become more conscious of presumed technical difficulties associated with building and analyzing a corpus. Indeed, CTS is widely known as a methodology that is good for tech-savvy researchers. Against this backdrop, the present study aims at identifying the current status and trends of CTS at home and abroad, in an attempt to shed light on “CTS in reality.” To this end, this study reviews 88 CTS-related journal articles?30 domestic and 58 international?in light of arguably the most debated topics in CTS: the definition of a corpus; methods of corpus analysis; representativeness and reliability; and practical issues with building and using a corpus. Findings reveal that the reviewed articles show a whole spectrum of CTS varieties, which the author hopes may help potential CTS researchers find ways to easily start their own studies with more confidence.
