In this paper, I comparatively research Kim Uk’s The Dance of Mental Anguish and Lee Ha-Yoon’s Scentless Flower Garden, two high volume anthologies of translated poems in colonial era. Since two books have same original poems, I compare the translational and poetical aspects of them to establish the difference of Korean styles between 1920s and 1930s. Their translational and poetical differences inductively reveal translator’s tasks, to form Korean poetry. Intending to departure from Japanese poetic style, translators attempt to compose the form of modern Korean poetry according to Korean syntax, and to form musical effects due to the word spacing and syllables of a line. Their task, the form of modern Korean poetry is involved in diverse matters such as a personal pronoun, exclamation, ending of word, postposition and the choices between Korean letters and Chinese letters. About this matters, during translational phases of poems, they made keen choices for forming modern poetry and their choices are not only musical effects and rhythm of poetry but the understanding of original texts. However, their efforts to form modern poetry revealed in translational phases do not correspond their own poems. As poets, translators do not departure from a fixed form of verse. Through independency of translation, Kim seeks a rule of modern poetry. Contradictively, his seeking delivers identity of translator to points irrelevant from original poems. Lee’s translational seeking partially complements Kim’s and it presents the path of modern poetry. However, Kim’s high-toned poetic theory inclined to phono-centrism and Lee’s excessive obsession toward musical and lyrical effects represent the anxiety of modern poesie.
