This article explains the main topics of public theology which are actively discussed in the theological field from the homiletical perspective. The purpose of this article is to identify the social character of preaching, to find the possibility of publicity recovery by using the prophetic preaching as motif, and to suggest the premise and specific principle for prophetic preaching. What a preacher should notice when he or she preaches is this: every preaching is an act of faith community and is the attempt for the proclamation of the gospel. The preachers who hold this understanding are constantly eager to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit with their congregation. The theme of the prophetic preaching includes judgment and hope, justice and mercy, prophecy, ethical messages, and eschatological messages. This means that prophetic preaching is critical on the privatization of the Word, thus offering the vision that builds the Kingdom of God in church, society, and world. When the totalitarian church, the tribal church, and the hostile church privatize the Word of God to shut God up in a church separating itself from the world, the prophetic preaching counters the reality by recovering the essence of the church and proclaiming that the world is the kingdom that God rules. Preachers have a responsibility to make faith community an environment in which prophetic preachings are nurtured. For this purpose, there should be an effort for integrity, spirit of accommodation, and a will of sacred imagination and innovation. The first job of a preacher who works for the recovery of church publicity is the reaffirmation of ecclesiology. The first step to purify the church, which has been severely influenced by consumerism, materialism, careerism, begins from ecclesiology. The next step is to give more weight to the legitimacy and sincerity of calling rather than to the perspective of church growth, when preachers interpret and apply the Bible. The possibility of maintaining prophetic preaching depends on how vividly one feels and expresses the creative imagination found in the promised word, e.g. the word in the Lord`s Supper. The preacher can experience change through homiletic attempts. This will be made possible by designing each sermon topic as reflecting public life, bilingual speech, ritualization of the story and song of community, and signature sermon.
