Gottfried Arnold (1666-1714), one of the outstanding Radical Pietists, is considered to mark an epoch in writing the history of the church. His famous work Unparteiische Kirchen-und Ketzerhistorie (Impartial History of the Church and the Heretics) had an impressive impact on the secular modern history writing as well. Arnold tried to impartially estimate the piety and practice of the true Christians excommunicated from the established church as heretics. He argued that the church since Constantine the Great who had legally sanctioned Christianity lost the integrity and the holiness of the Christian faith through the secular power and wealth. Therefore, he portrayed the "first Christians" before Constantine the Great as the purest and truest examples of Christianity. He admonished the church at that time to return to "the first love" as represented by the early church. For him, the witness of the first Christian became the standard by which all later forms of Christianity are to be measured. Arnold`s Unparteiische Kirchen-und Ketzerhistorie is actually a sequel to the previous Die erste Liebe (the first love). He underwent different stages during his lifetime, but he maintained the inner continuity of view on the true Church and the impartial assessment of so-called heretics with regard to piety and practice. After he experienced the negative side of the radical pietists and got married, he returned from the wings of Radical Pietism to a pastor of the Lutheran Church. However, his essential view on the true Church did not change. The formal distinction between the invisible and visible Church made no difference to him any more.
