The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the classical meaning of Wittgenstein’s early work, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, in contemporary philosophy. One of the key features of contemporary philosophy is its considerable emphasis on language. In particular, language analysis is used as a philosophical methodology in contemporary analytic philosophy, which is centered around the United Kingdom and United States. However, one of the greatest influences on contemporary analytic philosophy is in fact Wittgenstein, who decisively marked two major trends in the analytic philosophy of language, namely the ideal language school and the ordinary language school. Wittgenstein’s early works exerted influence on the Vienna Circle, while his later philosophy was continued by the Oxford School. This paper is particularly concerned with Wittgenstein’s early philosophy and focuses on the classical meaning of Tractatus. First, we look into the background of Tractatus and examine Wittgenstein’s critical mind as reflected the work. Then, we consider the impact of Tractatus on contemporary philosophy from three perspectives: Russell’s logical atomism, the Vienna circle’s logical positivism, and the function and role of philosophy. Our study shows that Wittgenstein’s Tractatus has contributed to great changes in contemporary philosophy and to the linguistic turn in particular. In that sense, we can confidently characterize Tractatus as a classic of the modern times.
