This paper purports to show that Arnold's project of criticism and culture provides a viable frame of reference by which we can diagnose a commonsense phenomenon of our time, 'the crisis of the humanities'. Facing up to the ideological disorder of English society in the post-revolutionary turmoil, Arnold highlighted the resuscitation of the function of criticism. Also he sought to raise up the level of collective consciousness to prevent democratic aspirations from deviating into sweeping populism. While there is much difference in world picture between so-called 'postmodern' era and Victorian age, Arnold's project remains to be completed with increasing urgency.
To begin with, this paper deals with the main thrust of Arnold's concept of criticism with special notice on his evaluation of the French revolution, and thereby reveals the cogency of the principle of ‘disinterestedness' in criticism. Next, we explore distinctive feature and practical relevance of Arnoldean ‘culture' by weighing it against other notions of it. The last part of this paper is the elaboration of Arnold's discussion on literature(poetry). Arnold thought literature to be functional in creating new ‘currents of feeling' in that it could restore self-interested masses to sympathetic and critical power.
