The theology of the Korean Church has developed out of the combination of influences both national and foreign according to historical stream. The ideas on the matter of theological trends in the Korean Church can be seen variously. Three representative trends may be characterized as `single,` `double,` and `triple.` The `single idea is Conservative Theology. Dr. Herald S, Hong insists that, in general, the trend has been toward extream fundamentalism. According to him, such a conservative type of theology blocked the introduction of other types of Christian thought. Dr. Spencer J. Palmer also writes that "fundamentalism held sway in the peninsula." The general trend of theology is either fundamentalism or conservatism. The `double idea is `Conservatism and Progressivism.` Dr. Rhee, Jong Sung refers to the theological conflict within the Protestant Church in Korea as the "Left and Right" of Conservatism and Progressivism in the Korean theological world. Dr. Chun, Sung Chun mentioned on this matter as "Fundamentalism and Modernism," or "Fundamentalism and Liberalism." The `triple` idea is "Conservatism, Progressivism and Liberalism." Dr. Ryu, Tong Shik mentiones in his Hankook Shinhak eui Kwangmek(韓國神學의 鑛脈) three streams of Korean theology, i.e., Conservative, Progressive, and Liberal theological thought. Dr. Choo, Chai-Yong also similarly views the streams of Korean theology as three: Conservative Theology, Progressive Theology of Life, and Indigenous Theology of Cultural Dialogue. As observed above, there are many various views on the theological trend of the Korean Church. The present writer, however, thinks a little differently, and he likes to insist another idea, that is, as from one to four idea developed according to the historical stream of the Korean Church. The original trend of theology in the Korean Church was, in general, one of conservative up to the 1930`s, but since that time the main conservative stream divided into two lines: Conservative and Progressive and it becomes four lines altogether divided into two from each line in the 1960`s such as Ultra Conservative Fundamentalism, Mild Conservative Evangelicalism, Participative Activism, and Religious Liberalism. In the confrontational situation existing since the latter part of 1960`s the Korean Church has begun to exert an effort in the social participation movement. Particularly the development of Korean theology such as "Minjung Theology` and P` ungryu Theology` among Korean progressive theologians during this period is very exciting and significant in terms of doing theology. It would be desirable to be continued and developed such a work further hereafter.
