The purpose of this study was to review community sport coaches for professionalization based on an extensive review of related literature. As the Korea society and economy changed over the course of the 1980s, more people became involved in sport. Expectations of sport coaches also began to change, and some people began to question whether sport coaches were adequately prepared for the job that they were being hired to do. Korea colleges and universities responded to the need for professional preparation of sport coaches by establishing curricular designed to provide the necessary skills and knowledge needed by a sport coach. In 1990, the Ministry of Culture and Travel implemented a national coaching certification program in hopes of providing sport coaches with the necessary background to perform at a high level. The coaching certification program offered by the MCT consists of the three levels. The findings of this study suggested that (1) the educational requirement for the third level should be physical education or community sports and recreation major, graduated from a two-year college; (2) the educational requirement for the second level should be physical education or community sports and recreation major, graduated from a four-year college; and (3) the role of the institute of sport coaches from each university should provide re-education program for coaches who have certification.
