This study incorporated narrative method and in-depth interview with 6 coaches of college athletes for data collection and further analysis.
6 coaches described their experiences as an athlete, with their coaches, and as a coach themselves in narrative. The narrative has been analyzed according to procedure of narrative research. The taxonomic analysis of Spradley (1979, 1980) has been adopted in analyzing the data. The results of the research can be summarized as below;
First, the coaches started sports when they were elementary school students and they grow up with dreams of becoming national representatives or pro athletes or even being coaches.
Secondly, the participants had various experiences with coaches along their journey of athletes. The types of the experiences with their coaches can be divided into two types of unity oriented coach and task oriented coach.
Absolute coaches had been criticized in that they were abused the athletes verbally and physically and they were indifferent to the athletes interests.
Thirdly, the coaches thought that their value formation based on the time of their athlete period. They consider their role seriously since they had experienced athlete life themselves. Their experience as athletes provide them introspection and persistent efforts to be a better coaches.
