This paper is a kind of case study about discussion class. Recently, two words ‘the Republic of miscommunications’ and ‘the republic of conflict’ were used to describe our society. Since our society is filled with miscommunications and conflicts, these two words fit well. Along with this social flow, many universities started to establish debate classes and emphasized them; this movement is related to the original purpose of debate: coordinating different opinions together and contributing to making ideal and healing society. However, if debates are proceeding with lack of humanistic foundation, it would cause problems in our society: The panelists become obsessed with winning and losing, and focus only on winning skills. This has caused tragedy such as personal attack or even murder. These horrible sufferings make people look back on our debate culture. Even though having these side effects, discussion is needed for a social communication reason. Hence, making healthy debate culture is necessary rather than cutting off the culture. In this case, debate classes in universities are expected to provide significant experience.
Debate classes which contain humanistic foundation let debaters admit their differences between each other, and consider their lives and communities. In the end, the panelists recognize the fact that discussion is essential for human lives and community, and build healthy attitude toward discussion.
This paper assumes that debaters can achieve healthy attitude through discussion. For example, to make a place for self-examination and communication, debaters should recognize their unawareness, and try to seek knowledge while discussing. Also, they have to listen carefully to each others’ opinion; while listening, debaters should respect to each other. Through these actions, the panelists can reach self-examination, and attain a matured attitude. According to Dongeuibogam(????), the Korean traditional medical encyclopedia, there is a saying, “If energy is not circulating well, it might cause pain. ([不通?痛])” However, if the flow becomes smooth, “energy will circulate well, and the pain will be healed. ([通?不通])” The healthy run of debate class and healthy attitude of debaters’ would become healthy flow which can get rid of miscommunications in our society.
