??This study is to find out the images of the earth with the will and the rest as Gaston Bachelard’s suggestion and to apply to an Irish poet, Seamus Heaney and a Korean poet, Jae-Mu Lee, so to examine how they sublimate their works with images of the earth. Imaginative criticism of Bachelard is originally to take out the irrational parts such as fantasy, reverie, instinct and impulse into literary works. So its purpose is to examine the irrationality of texts by applying to comparable illogical things with possible logical frames. In other words, imaginative criticism is a vision verifying that the irrational(imagination) itself is rather logical and the reverie is not arbitrary but invariable to follow the rules.
??According to Bachelard’s imaginative theory, the element of earth has the ambivalent characteristic. Water is flexible and air is light, but earth is resistant and aggressive as well as stable and firm constantly. The solid material is not only one of shelter but an obstacle that we should overcome at the same time.
??While Heaney is experiencing and looking at the land of Ireland, he is sure to pay attention to the dynamics of earth and go through its reverie. He passes the dialectics of imagination for earth first while he works and rests himself in field, mountains and his daily life rather than resolves to speak for the hard lives of laborers and to emphasize the history and myth of Ireland. Jae-Mu Lee tends to revive lyricism of home rather than figures out the macroscopic epic or conception. He also accumulates his childhood obviously as a nutrient of growth and has a great sense of conceiving and extending constantly the impulse that he has experienced the nature at first. Both poets have the insistent affection for earth and make effort to express their lyricism, productivity and dynamics of earth and nature as a phenomenology of object and material rather than as an epic structure. Therefore, it is obvious that both poets includes the imaginative processes in their poetics, which they have experienced and investigated things like earth and soil, and imagined them in their place.
