Heaney’s early poems cover the images of water and Irish bog with Gaelic place names and combination of water and earth. Heaney’s bog has a microscopic structure, a structure in which ordinary space expands itself into an historical site or an external world. Contrary images such as past and present, in and out, individual and community, Ireland and England, life and death, operate dialectically in his poems rather than simply enlarging spatial size. In his poetic creative process, he catches instant and intent images without losing remembrance of historical accidents. Because his poetic spaces were born again without losing their original properties of elements, roundness or circular images like recovering and returning can be reminiscent. Heaney’s poems of locality are written to revive original meaning of Irish places and to arrange images of mythic etymology. Irish bog or bogland is not only a place embracing historical events and victims, but also a familiar place that Irish people get lives now. Irish bog is a place that harmonizes a vowel as an Irish image with a consonant as a British image. Bachelard’s topo-analysis is systematic and psychological research for spaces of inner lives. He figures out that poetic images permeate and dissolve into the other images. The valuation for spaces can be witnessed in Heaney’s bogland. Irish bog or swamp have the meanings of historical accidents, past experience and mythical legend related to death and revival. Bachelard’s earth and Heaney’s bogland can be involved in Jungian collective remembrance. Besides, images of hard labor and comfortable repose can be found in Heaney’s bog poems.
