In this paper, we study the theological epistemologies of Thomas Aquinas and Martin Luther. These two theologians agree at least on two points. Firstly, they concur on the extent of the knowledge obtained by the natural reason. Both think that all we know through the natural reason is the divine attributes deduced from the knowledge of the creatures. The second point, which results from the first, is that the knowledge of the saviour God comes only from that of God revealed in Jesus Christ.
However, they are divergent on their theological epistemologies. This divergence results from their different theological principles. That of Thomas is the theological axiom that the grace does not destroy the nature but presupposes and completes it. That of Luther, however, is the doctrine of the justification by faith which constitutes the hermeneutical key to his whole thought. These different principles bring the significant difference in their perspectives about the importance of the natural knowledge. Luther does not consider the natural knowledge of God seriously, which is not connected with the justification by faith. On the contrary, Thomas gives more importance than Luther to the natural knowledge. Although he knows well its limits, he considers that a little natural knowledge about the highest realities can bring a great joy.
This study shows that a big change has taken place concerning the understanding of the relationship between faith and reason during the three centuries from Thomas to Luther. Thomas thinks that both originate from God, which prevent them from being contradictory. The reason has its proper competency and autonomy, but is open to the light of faith. On the basis of this understanding between the reason and faith, Thomas permits the utilization of philosophy in theology on condition that the former serves the latter. On the contrary, Luther, reacting against the later scholastic theology which is philosophized, criticizes the utilization of philosophy and contrast the reason darkened by the sin against the faith.
