Mong? Nog?ltae[蒙語老乞大] is one of the famous trilogy for learning Mongolian[蒙學三書] published by Korean Say?gwon[司譯院] in the middle of 18c. Although much literature was produced on the trilogy, little attention has been paid to 26 kinds of loan words written in chinese characters in Mong? Nog?ltae. As these words are also transcribed in Hangul as well as in traditional Mongolian script, it may be worth paying attention in the study of Middle Korean, Mongolian, and further in Chinese phonology.
By comparing them one another in phonological aspects, this study has found some facts as follow;
(1) Most of the words are considered to correspond to middle Chinese and Middle Korean transcriptions.
(2) Two are thought to be correspond to the earlier Chinese, with another two till unidentifiable about the period. The latter would possibly belong to the Chinese.
(3) Some interesting transcription as ira (for Shin-la, 新羅), ?ohan(for Chosun, 朝鮮) are worth further investigation.
