There are about 30,000 dolmens in Korea. Among them, approximately 600 dolmens remain in Gyeonggi Province. There exist mixed types of the dolmens including table-shaped type, checker board-shaped type, and the modified form of dolmen, which can help to comprehend various cultural aspects in dolmen society. They were mainly located along the western coast, basin and its branches of Han River, and nearby hilly districts. Some dolmens were found in the top of the hills such as relics in Deokeun-ri, Paju and Seonbu-dong, Ansan.
The study has been conducted starting from excavating dolmens in Okseok-ri and Gyoha-ri in Paju city. In particular, it is noteworthy thing is that we found out the relation between dolmen and location of the houses, structure of special tomb room in a dolmen, connection of tomb rooms inside table-shaped and checker board-shaped dolmens. As for the burial method, it is suspected that stretching-out burial and dual-burial methods were widely used. As for the No.2 dolmen of Seonbu-dong in Ansan city, it has special characteristic to have a panel attached to a tomb room in the dolmen. Many damaged relics were found in broken state including pattern-less wares. From the fact, we suspected that a certain ritual was performed there. Taking another case, in the dolmen in Angdeok-ri, Yangpyong, red soil was found in the tomb room, which means another ritual service was performed. As for grave goods, only Korean-style bronze sword in early times was found in the dolmen in Sangjapo-ri, Yangpyong. Other dolmens had relatively poor relics in which ground stone tools and wares take the most part. Such characteristics suggest many implications for further researches and utilization of dolmens in Gyeonggi Province.
