During the Mongol invasions of Korea, the Dangun legend is thought to have played an important role in national unity and patriotic mobilization against the invaders. Gosindo, a version of Korean shamanism that considered Dangun one of the Trinity God had largely died out by the 15th century.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a resurgence in Korean nationalism after repeated Japanese invasions and the beginning of Japanese rule, the movement was revived in Dae-jong-gyo. It was promoted by Hong Am Na Cheol(1864-1916), but could not survive the repression under the occupation, since it conflicted with the Japanese cultural assimilation policy. After the surrender of Japan and Korean liberation, Dae-jong-gyo was revived, although it remains a minor religion.
In this paper, we would like to find global citizenship value of Great Happiness in Hong Am Na Cheol’ thoughts. We can say like such things. First of all, Hong Am considered old Humanitarian thought as Three fidelity unity such as controlled sense, harmonious energy, and free from desires.
Secondly, Global citizenship with Korean spirit is citizenship with toleration and esteem of the cultural diversity as like affection for species and religious pluralism declared by Hong Am. In this context, we can find humanitarian Great Happiness with the practice of nature awareness learning attainment.
Thirdly, Historical consciousness of Hong Am is not the colonial view of history but continental view of history. Hong Am devoted himself to n ancestral tablet of Korean bright of the great man and descended the great work in the Korean history.
Fourthly, Hong Am stimulated the same root feeling about the Dangun and imbue a mind with patriotism national pride. Protesting about the taking away the people’ freedoms of speech, press, assembly and casting darkness over the whole country, He gasped out his life by closing his breath in the year of 1916. In the context of thoughts of Hong Am, we can find humanitarian Great Happiness value by way of recovering true nature.
