Jeong taehwa (1602-1670) and Heo Jeok (1610~1680) were famous prime ministers known for their active involvement in politics and foreign affairs during the Qing (淸) intervention into the state. While Cheong and Heo were leaders of the then-leading factions of the Young Members, Soron (少論), and the Southern Members, Namin (南人), respectively, they maintained a profound friendship. This paper explores fifteen poems entitled “Missing Title,” or “Silje” 失題, from the Yangpa Yugo (陽坡遺稿), or Cheong Tae-hwa’s Literary Remains, and newly identifies them as Cheong’s poems addressed to Heo during the two periods both of them were in Yichu(義州). which was an important border town between Korea and Qing.
In October 1639, Cheong went from Seoul to Yichu as a special minister to greet Qing envoys. At that time, Heo was employed in the minister’s office as a young and active assistant. In Yichu, while they were awaiting the Qing envoy for several weeks, Cheong composed four poems to Heo jeok in order to quell boredom.
Two years later, in December 1641, Heo was promoted and became a major of Yichu while holding two other important positions as special minister for transporting rations and commander in charge of safeguarding the national border. In December the following year, Cheong Tae-hwa came to Yichu and was detained for a month because of an investigation conducted by Qing generals, who took issue with Cheong’s having kept in touch with a number of Ming (明) officials previously. At that time Heo earnestly consoled his senior Cheong by means of wine and idle dalliance. As a token of his thanks for Heo’s hospitality, Cheong composed eleven more poems. Unfortunately, Heo Jeok ended his life as a traitor, resulting in the erasure of his name from numerous formal records, including the Yangpa Yugo. For this reason, the titles of Cheng Tae-hwa’s fifteen poems addressed to Heo Jeok survive as “Missing Title.”
In Studies of Korean Historical Figures, Vo1.12, I have written a review article on Cheong Tae-wha and his literary works dealing with merry-making with wine and gisaeng(妓生), or cheonglu (靑樓) In the review article I introduced numerous poems written by Cheong addressed to gisaeng, whom Cheong Tae-hwa met in his twenties and thirties serving as head of Tongjin (通津) County, an assistant of the special minister sent to Anju (安州) to greet a Ming envoy, and finally a governor of Chungcheong (忠淸) Province. The discussions in this paper augment what was introduced in the review article.
This paper is significant for its dealings in poems that are part of a rare literary subject, namely cheonglu, as well as for restoring the vanished footprints of Heo Jeok.
