This paper highlights the academic and political aspects in differentiating the family of Guam(久庵) Kim Cwi-mun(金就文, 1509~1570), Seonsan Kim Clan(善山金氏) that was known for one of the the illustrious ones at Seosan district, Gyeongsang Province in the late Joseon period.
As a representative follower of Songdang(松堂), Pak Yeong(朴英, 1471~1540), members of Seonsan clan, have persisting in their single academic or political line until the 16th century, declared the two different lines such as the Yeongnam school(i.e. Southern fraction, 南人) and Giho school(i.e. Western fraction, 西人) respectively ; the generation of Kim Jong-mu(金宗武) played their role as the core Namin members following the academic tradition originated from Yu Seong-nyog and Jang Hyeon-gwang, expanding their scholastic and regional scopes underlined the academic pedigree from Kim Seong-il through the engagement or marriage. Manifesting their scholastic line created by Seong Hon and following a famous Southern fraction scholar, Song Si-yeol, the other generation of Kim Jong-yu(金宗儒), have positioned as the Southern fraction followers at every political issues since the 17th century. Even though there were political conflicts between the two generations, they bilaterally cooperated in worshiping their ancestors. It shows that their political discrepancies did not functioned in their household management based on blood relations.
The main subject of this paper, the family of Guam Kim Chwi-mun(1509~1570), Seonsan Kim clan, deserves to sturdy in more details, because of their distinguished role as a Southern political fraction family, their solid position in Yeongnam society, producing ample episodes concerning the conflicts and cooperations between descendent families. This paper is waiting for further research and more sophisticated analysis toward the presence of scholar-officials in Yeongnam region in the late Joseon period.
