The subject of Mississippi Summer Project has received considerable attention, and treatments of it tend to either romanticize or sensationalize race relation within the Movement. The Freedom Summer brought about one thousand volunteers to the Mississippi: most of which were northen white middle class youths. Allowing northern Whites to take part in the Movement created a tension within the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee from the beginning. Ultimately the experience of Freedom Summer led to racial conflicts and internal divisions that had a negative impact on SNCC as an organization. The inclusion of so many white, middle-class volunteers led to ideological and organizational polarity that undermined SNCC's efficacy and caused some to question the feasibility of such an interracial coalition. The increased hostility towards whites and the rise of Black Power were viewed as contingent and threatening by the nation at large and led to a loss of support by the liberal establishment and to repression by governmental force. The combination of internal factionalism and external opposition diminished SNCC's ability to effect change in the South and ultimately debilitated the organization. The impact of theses conflicts on SNCC's evolution is often minimized in studies. It is evident that Freedom Summer made issues of direction and cohesion more difficult to address by creating division within the movement. With the eventual expulsion of whites from the organization, SNCC became subjected to external repression. Clearly many other factors also contributed to SNCC's demise. Even before the Freedom Summer, SNCC was experiencing organizational problems and disagreement. However, the conflicts between blacks and whites during Freedom Summer suggest that the differences in experiences were too great to be reconciled. The factious atmosphere after Mississippi Summer Project hindered SNCC's ability to adapt to these changes.
