During the summer of 1964, Council of Federated Organizations began Mississippi summer project. Over 1,000 people entered the state of Mississippi. They were called 'the volunteers.' They were mostly northerners, white and young, and were from middle-upper class. National attention had been focused on the project; most of all, the eyes of white and black Mississippians were fixed upon their undertaking.
This article examines their experience and activity through a collection of moving, personal letters written by volunteers of the summer. Narratives of volunteers give us a deeply personal look at key moments of Mississippi Freedom Summer and remind us that changes happen because regular youths have decided they were willing to fight for civil rights. At first, the volunteers made it possible to open a closed society, Mississippi, despite white threat, harassment and violence; Mississippi white could not continue to maintain many of the myths about separation of the race after Freedom Summer. And they also changed idea of black-white relations among local black people: they lived with black families, ate at their tables, and played with them. The integration beyond racial, class, and educational differences brought openness, honesty, trust, and respect. For most volunteers and Black Mississippians alike, those interactions were important and moving experiences. And from lessons learned during the summer of 1964, many volunteers expanded progressive activism in the late 1960's and 1970's.
