Rorraine Hansberry is a typical black dramatist who has been loved by both black people and white. Her first work, A Raisin in the Sun, achieved popularity in Broadway, by which she succeeded in attracting white audience to her drama. Some critics have attacted her conformity to white society because she was born in middle class. However, she experienced terrible terror of white racist in her childhood, and her residence was located in black community which was ristricted by white society in Chicago. In spite of her good conditions of living, she dared to make friends with her poor black children. Probably her family background enables her to have universal attitude in dealing with the subject of black family in this drama.
In this drama, we can find Hansberry's intention to induce black people to live as a normal citizen in American society. Under the materialistic environment controlled by the whites, the black people are forced to suffer psychological thaos caused by the gap between American Dream and their reality. The slogan of American suggests equality and fair opportunity to all the people of United States. The innocent black people are inclined to have the same illusion with the whites. Gradually they face the real situation of unfair society. At this moment they lose their past identities influenced by materialistic values. In this drama, Walter and Beneatha show their confusion and conflict among their family. The kinship of Walter's family is broken down completely by suspicion and lack of trust. The patriarchal authority established by Lena's generosity comes to be endangered by Walter's failure in business. Through experiencing this suffering, Walter and Beneatha recognize the reality and their true identities so that Walter decides to reject Linener's offer and to move to their new house located in the community of the whites. Lindner, the representative of the white community, tried to persuade them that they can give this family more money if this family give up to move. He says that the white and the black can enjoy happiness only when they live seperately. As a matter of fact, this family can restore the money lost by the innocence and immaturity of Walter. But Walter comes to recognize that the most important thing is not money, but pride and confidence as a humanbeing.
This decision heightens Walter into tragic hero because he can overcome materialistic desire which made them conform to the values of the whites. He chooses human dignity as indispensable element in human life. Beneatha plans to leave America and to work in America and help the poor Africans. Maybe they are common people and this decision appears to be trivial to the great men. But this kind of act can happen by enormous sacrifice and courage in the world of lower class. This process from innocence to maturity can be applied to initiation rite. And the influence of this rite leads Walter and Beneatha to have heroic aspects in this drama.
